Residual size contractions [delta](3d), [delta](4d), and [delta](4f + 5d), in the relevant series ions with the filled 2s[sup 2]2p[sup 6]-, 3s[sup 2]3p[sup 6], 3d[sup 10]5s[sup 2]5p[sup 6], and 4f[sup 14]5d[sup 10]6s[sup 2]6p[sup 6]-electron shells have been demonstrated and evaluated over the rock-salt-series compounds. The obtained values range as follows: [delta](3d) = 1.44 [approximately] 1.59 ([angstrom]/3d series), [delta](4d) = 1.30 [approximately] 1.45 ([angstrom]/4d series), and [delta](4f + 5d) = 3.00 [approximately] 3.08 ([angstrom]/4f-plus-5d series). Since similar residual size contractions, [delta](3d) = 1.49 [approximately] 1.70 [angstrom] and [delta](4d) = 1.40 [approximately] 1.46 [angstrom], have been obtained for the inert-gas series crystals with fcc structure, alkali-metal series crystals with bcc structure, and IVb-element series crystals with diamond structure, these size contractions are attributed to the contractions in the cores of atoms and ions.
