Model calculations for a 600 angstrom laser based on photopumping of Mo sup 6+ by a spectral line of Mo sup 11+ Model calculations for a 600 angstrom laser based on photopumping of Mo sup 6+ by a spectral line of Mo sup 11+
We assess aspects of the feasibility of a recent proposal to use the coincidence between a Mo{sup 11+}, 136.499 {angstrom}, line and a 4p{sup 6} {minus} (4p{sup 5}){sub 1/2}6s, J = 1, transition of Mo{sup 6+}, to obtain amplified spontaneous emission around 600 {angstrom}. A collisional-radiative model for the Mo{sup 6+} ion, including resonant photoexcitation of the 4p{sup 5}{sub 1/2}6s level, was constructed using the HULLAC atomic physics package. The model included the 4s{sup 2}4p{sup 6}; 4p{sup 5}4d,4f; 4p{sup 5}5s,5p,5d; 4p{sup 5}6s,6p,6d; 4s4p{sup 6}4d,4f; 4p{sup 6}4d{sup 2} and 4s{sup 2}4p{sup 4}4d{sup 2} configurations, amounting to 193 levels. All configuration interactions and collisional mixing was taken into account. A gain of 3 cm{sup {minus}1} is obtained for the 4p{sup 5}6s(J = 1)--4p{sup 5}5p(J = 2) transition at 645 {angstrom} with T{sub e} = eV, n{sub e} = 10{sup 18} cm{sup {minus}3}, and an effective radiation temperature of T{sub rad} > 40 eV for the pump transition. Other transitions exhibit lower gains. 18 refs., 4 figs., 1 tab.
