The heat-transfer mechanism of the evaporator of a thermosiphone-type heat pipe is considered in this paper. The rate and the coefficient of heat transfer of nine test pieces were measured. The amount of the working fluid and the surface structures were different for all the test pieces. The occurrence of nucleate boiling in both the liquid film and the pool side was confirmed. As a result of the nucleate boiling in the liquid film, and because the heat-transfer performance is dependent on the nucleate boiling heat transfer, the capability of the thermosiphone- type heat pipe has improved; however, the existence of dryout had a negative effect on the performance of the system.
