High momentum pion and kaon production in the upsilon region

Thesis/Dissertation ·
OSTI ID:5016501
CLEO, a large magnetic detector has been used to determine the ratio of high momentum charged pions to all high momentum charged hadrons produced with colliding e/sup */e/sup -/ beams. Data were obtained for the continuum near the upsilon(4S), at the upsilon(4S) resonance and at the upsilon(2S) resonance. The data are compared with a Monte Carlo calculation to estimate the strange quark content of the 'ocean' from which quarks are created during fragmentation. The pion fraction is combined with inclusive hadron cross sections to give inclusive pion cross sections for momenta above 1.5 GeV. The beams were provided by CESR, the pressure Cerenkov counters which were in place in CLEO from its commissioning in the fall of 1979 until January 1981. Documentation of the Cerenkov counters is included.
