Threaded tubular connections for oil and gas wells have been made up using thread dope for several decades. Thread dope is used to improve the galling and leak resistance of the connection. Galling resistance is necessary for reuse of the connection. Safety problems caused by the use of thread dope have been discussed in the oil and gas industry. One problem with its use is environmental pollution caused by the heavy-metal particles that it contains. Another is contamination of produced fluids with dope that is extruded from couplings during makeup. Other problems include high stress in the connection, hardened dope in arctic use, and galling because of mismatches between the dope and the connection-surface treatment. A threaded tubular connection with a new surface treatment has been developed that performs as well as conventional connections but requires no thread dope.
