How loading affects tubular thread shoulder seals
Most shouldered connections used on OCTG (oil country tubular goods) premium connections seal when pressure tested under no tensile load conditions. When the same connection is loaded in tension, the shoulder may or may not continue to seal depending on makeup torque, tensile load, thread pitch, taper, and other factors. Care in assuring makeup to thread manufacturer's specifications provides the best assurance of good performance. Many API and premium OCTG connections are run each year. Nearly all of these connections adequately serve their purpose. Most of them are subjected to pressure and tensile loads far below their rated values, and therefore it is only reasonable to expect the percentage of failures to be small. However, the trend toward deeper, sour gas wells with higher pressures and temperatures requires that connections be carefully examined in these demanding applications to assure that the downhole conditions are properly handled. Premium connections, since they are specified for unusually demanding applications, should especially be subjected to a thorough review under operating conditions.
