Study of. lambda. /sup +//sub c/ charmed baryons produced in neutron-carbon interactions at approx. 58 GeV

The BIS-2 spectrometer has been used in nC interactions at an average neutron energy near 58 MeV to observe the production of ..lambda../sup +//sub c/ charmed baryons decaying into K-bar/sup 0/p..pi../sup +/..pi../sup -/ and ..lambda../sup 0/..pi../sup +/..pi../sup +/..pi../sup -/. In the diffraction model of ..lambda../sup +//sub c/ production, estimates are obtained of the products of the production cross sections and the probabilities of the decays ..lambda../sup +//sub c/..-->..K-bar/sup 0/p..pi../sup +/..pi../sup -/ and ..lambda../sup +//sub c/..--> lambda../sup 0/..pi../sup +/..pi../sup +/..pi../sup -/, which are respectively 32.2 +- 4.4 and 5.5 +- 1.8 ..mu..b per carbon nucleus. The systematics errors are about 50%. It is found that the mass of the ..lambda../sup +//sub c/ is 2275 +- 15 MeV/c/sup 2/. The invariant distributions of ..lambda../sup +//sub c/ in the perpendicular and longitudinal momenta for X>0.4 are approximated respectively by exp((-2.2 +- 0.5)p/sub perpendicular/) and (1-x)/sup 1.2plus-or-minus0.2/ (p/sub perpendicular/ is in GeV/c).
