A singular combination of water injection and gas lift, on a large scale, is notably increasing the production of one Mexican oil field. The field Tamaulipas-Constitutiones near Tampico, produced about 13,000 bpd. When the injection of water was increased to around 200,000 bpd, the production was raised to 30,000 bpd. The state company, Petroleos Mexicanos (Pemex), expects this volume to be sustained some 6 yr, then declining gradually until the end of exploitation, about 35 yr. The facilities to double the flood capacity were completed in March 1970. Pemex has installed a modern gas-lift network, and conducts extensive well stimulation by fracturing. Primary production methods permitted extracting 8.6% of the in place reserves, calculated at 1,017,700,000 bbl. The accumulated primary production is more than 40,000,000 bbl. Waterflooding is expected to result in the recovery of 164,300,000 bbl.
