Neutron radiography at the Studsvik R2-0 reactor

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4940022
Two neutron radiography units have been constructed around the 1 MW swimming-pool reactor R2-0 at Studsvik. The objectives for the first unit were to study the potentialities of neutron radiography and to gain experience of the technique without great investment in equipment. One of the most immediate applications envisaged was the inspection of irradiated fuel rods. These objectives were met by a fucility immersed in the reactor pool, the water serving as a radiation shield. The pool unit, although cheap and well suited for fuel rod inspection, has several serious drawbacks, such as limited object size and geometry, poor accessibility and a high gamma background. For this reason, and because of the potentialities of neutron radiography outside the fuel inspection field, another facility was installed in one of the beam holes through the concrete shield of the reactor. Among the characteristics of this facility are a continuously variable aperture, a high neutron-to-gamma ratio and a soft neutron spectrum. Despite a considerable effort to reach different categories of potential customers, the demand for neutron radiography service comes almost exclusively from the nuclear-energy sector. In connection with test irradiations of nuclear fuel in the R2 reactor, neutron radiography has become a routine procedure. (21 references) (auth)
