Study of the adaptation of an external heavy ion source with the Grenoble isochronous cyclotron (in French)

Thesis. After studying the possibilities of accelerating heavy ions in the isochronous cyclotron at Grenoble, an internal Penning-type source was chosen. The possibility of placing such a source outside the cyclotron was also examined. Two ways of extracting the ions from the magnetic field of the external source were studied. With the first method the ions are guarded in the median plane, and the curvature of the trajectories is inverted. With the second an inflector is used to deflect the ions vertically through a hole in one pole of the source magnet. In addition, a device for measuring emittances in a magnet field was specially developed for these studies. In conclusion, both methods enable heavy ions to be injected from the external source on the Grenoble cyclotron under good conditions. (auth)
