Utilization of an external heavy ion source with the isochronous Grenoble cyclotron (in French)

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4939083
Thesis. The possibility of accelerating heavy ions in the isochronous cyclotron at Grenoble was studied. An internal Penning-type source was chosen for this purpose. The possibility of placing such a source outside the cyclotron was also examined. Two ways of extracting the ions from the magnetic field of the external source were studied. With the first method, the ions are guided in the median plane, and the curvature of the trajectories is inverted. With the second, an inflector is used to deflect the ions vertically through a hole in one pole of the source magnet. In addition a device for measuring emittances in a magnetic field was specially developed for these studies. In conclusion, both methods are suitable for the injection of heavy ions from an external source into the Grenoble cyclotron. (FR)
