From second international congress for pressure vessel and piping technology; San Antonio, Texas, USA (1 Oct 1973). Studies were conducted to develop a constant time ultrasonic method of testing stainless steel clad components. In testing thick-plate welds, it is necessary, in order to scan the whole wall thickness, to move the transducer back and forth. To record the defect signal a gate is needed that is fixed, but large enough to take into account all the signals corresponding to different time intervals, or a narrow one, designed to follow the transducer's position. In the case of immersion testing the transducer is moved along such path, as to keep constant the total time of travel of the ultrasonic waves in the coupling medium and in the metal. Several advantages of this method are described. (JRD)
