Concerning the determination of traces of oxygen and carbon in sodium or cesium by means of activation analysis (in French)

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4935133
From BNES international conference on liquid alkali metals; Nottingham, UK (4 Apr 1972). Methods developed and used for the determination of very low concentrations of carbon and oxygen in sodium and cesium are described. These elements can be determined by activation 9725 (AERE-R-7662) TWO NOMOGRAMS YOR GAS analysis by means of bremsstrahlung gamma photons. The nuclear reactions used are /sup 16/O( gamma ,n)/sup 15/O and /sup 12/C( gamma ,n)/sup 11/C. Oxyg en and carbon lead respectively to 15/O and /sup 11/C wtth half-lives of 2.69 and 20.3 min after activation. This allows a cleaning after irradiatton and then an elimination of all contamination of the metal by its container or the ambient medium. This method has the advantage of needing no blanks if the experimental conditions, particularly the maximum irradiation energy, are well chosen. The chemical separation procedures used are describsd. Numerous results are g;ven of the determination of oxygen and carbon in sodium and cesium. The methods developed make it possible to determine for the first time the oxygen and carbon concentrations as low as 0.3 mu g/g in sodium. (tr-auth)
