The methods developed to determine very low concentrations of C and O in Na or Cs are developed. These two elements can be determined by the reactions / sup 12/C( gamma ,n)/sup 11/C and /sup 16/O( gamma ,n)/su p 15/O. The chemical separation procedures used to separate /sup 11/C and /sup 15/O are described. The effect of competitive nuclear reactions producing these same isotopes from other impurities or from the mntrix in the case of Na is discussed. Numerous application examples are given. These methods allowed the determination of O concentrations of several 10/sup -1/ mu g/g and C concentrations of about 1 mu g/g in Na. The concentrations found in Cs are higher. The results are compared with those obtained by other methods. (tr-auth)
