Some notes on pair statistics

It is assumed that the parent and the daughter pulses stemming from a two-step nuclear decay cannot be readily distinguished, as for example is usually the case for beta particles and highly converted gamma rays. A pair'' is said to be counted if both the parent and the daughter pulse from a specific decay have been registered within a centain measuring time T, all other pulses being denoted singles. The intermediate state has a mean lifetime lambda /sup -1/ and the detection efficiencies of the counters for the parent and daughter pulses are considered; dead-time effects not being taken into account. The interest is focused on the statistical behavior of the total process which consists of the random superposition of parent and daughter pulses. (FR)
