This paper reviews the economic and technical benefits of using electronic flow meters (EFM) as the primary tool for monitoring and controlling gas flow in distribution and collection systems. The paper reviews the GPM Gas Corporation`s plans to ultimately install EFM`s at all 18,000 meter stations. It describes the methods of selecting appropriate EFM`s and the use of the system to provide automated tracking information for producers and consumers. It also discusses the reliability and performance of these systems compared to conventional mechanical systems and recorders.
