Reactor production of carrier-free 54Mn from natural iron

The reactor yields of 54Mn, produced by the 54Fe(n,p)54 threshold reaction, were measured in the Oak Ridge Research Reactor (ORR) and Low Intensity Test Reactor (LITR). An extrapolated maximum production of 15 mc of 54Mn per gram of natural iron was obtained for a 22-day irradiation in an ORR partial-fuel-element facility. Carrier-free 54Mn was separated from associated iron and cobalt activities by elution from an anion exchange column with hydrochloric acid. (auth)
