From American Ceramic Society Basic Science Division Meeting, Washington, D. C., Oct. 1963. X-ray diffraction, differential thermal analysis, quench techniques, electrical conductivity measurements, and microscopic examination were used to determine the phase relations in the ZrO/sub 2/-rich portion of the Sc/sub 2/O/sub 3/--ZrO/sub 2/ sy stem. Two birefringent compounds with the approximate fomrulae Sc/sub 2/Zr/sub 2/O/sub 7/ and Sc/sub 2/Zr/sub 7/O/ sub 17/ were found t o occur in the system. Sc/sub 2/Zr/sub 2/O/sub 7/ inverts to a cubic form at about 1250 deg C. The inversion temperature is depressed with the addition of ZrO/sub 2/ in solid solution and at the solid solution limit of 16 mole% Sc/sub 2/O/sub 3/, the inversion temperature is about 800 deg C. Sc/sub 2/Zr/sub 7/O/sub 17/ is rhombohedral at room temperature and inverts to cubic structure at 610 deg C. Up to two mole% Sc/sub 2/O/sub 3/ enters ZrO/sub 2/ in solid solution aud depresses the monoclinic ZrO/sub 2/ inversion to about 750 deg C. The data presently available indicate little or no solid solution of Sc/sub 2/ O/sub 3/ in the low temperature form of Sc/sub 2/Zr/sub 2/O/sub 7/. (auth)
