Kinetics of the reaction of elemental fluorine with zirconium carbide and zirconium diboride at high temperatures
The fluorination of copper foil was studied at 500 deg C in order to check the experimental apparatus for fluorination studies. The fluorination of ZrC and ZrB/sub 2/ was carried out at low F/sub 2/ partial pressures. The ZrC -- F/sub 2/ reaction was found to be linear with time at a F/sub 2/ pressure of 31 mm from 278 to 410 deg C, but breaks above 334 deg C indicate the breaking up of the fluoride layer on ZrC. The linear rate constants were computed, and the activation energy was found to be 22.1 plus or minus 1.8 kcal/mole. No reaction of ZrB/sub 2/ with F/sub 2/ occurred until the temperature reached 500 deg C and higher; a weight gain was observed at 500 deg C and 4 mm F/sub 2/, while weight was lost at 600 to 900 deg C, with a maximum corrosion rate at 500 deg C.
