THERMODYNAMIC AND KINETIC STUDIES FOR A REFRACTORY MATERIALS PROGRAM

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4673807
Studies during 1962 are reported on a program to provide the thermodynamic and kinetic data which are required to describe the chemical behavior of the zircomiium and hafnium carbides amid borides at temperatures to 3000 deg K and in atmospheres of O/sub 2/, O/sub 2/ + H./sub 2/O, Cl/sub 2/, HF, F/sub 2/, H/su b 2/, Co, NH/sub 3/, and N/sub 2/. Preparation of high purity ZrC, ZrO/sub 2/ HfB/sub 2/, and HfC is described. Experimental low temperature heat capacity data for ZrC and heat content data for ZrB/sub 2/ from 410 to 1126 deg K are presented. Current status of calorimetric, electron diffraction, equilibria, amid spectroscopy studies are reported. Kinetic studies are described on the oxidation of ZrC from 550 to 650 deg C at one atmosphere oxygen pressure and from 850 to 1900 deg C at oxygen pressures of 3 to 26 torr, on the oxidation of ZrB/sub 2/ for the conditions 1200 to 1500 deg C and oxygen pressure of 7 to 38.75 torr and 945 to 1256 deg C at oxygen pressures up to one atmosphere, ub 2/. The results of metallographic examination of the oxidized ZrC and ZrB/sub 2/ samples are discussed. Electrical conductivity studies are reported on pure ZrO/sub 2/ from room to 1700 deg C. The oxidation kinetics of molybdenium metal were studied in the temperature range 1400 to 2000 deg K and oxygen pressures of 10/sup -5/ to 10/sup -6/ atmospheres using a mass spectrometer with necessary source modifications.
