Despite its relatively small size, the Republic of Korea has one of the most dynamic nuclear power plant construction programs in the world. With nine power reactors now operating, Korea Electric Power Corp. (Kepco) plans to add nine units by 2001, and then nine more by 2006. On the operating side, the utility has been using its current nuclear units quite efficiently: Since 1984, the average annual unit capacity factor has been more than 70 percent. In 1991, that statistic was 84.4 percent (more than five percent higher than the previous year), and during the first half of this year, it was 79.5 percent. The utility`s target for 2001 is 83 percent.
