Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) is the only electric utility in the Republic of Korea. Its peak load reached 13,658 MW last August, and is expected to grow as the Korean economy expands. To cope with the growing complexity of system operation, KEPCO implemented an advanced energy management system at the national control center in 1988. This paper describes the KEPCO EMS with an emphasis on its major features such as power application software, computer system configuration, data acquisition subsystem, data communications, man-machine interface, security constrained economic dispatch, and simulators for factory acceptance test. Its functional overview, high system performance, and actual operating experience are also described.
