A magnetometer of the free nuclear precession type is spect to the field being measured and which avoids the drawbacks of a pulsed polarizing field. ln the magnetometer, a liquid containing nuclei of large gyromagnetic ratio is passed successively through a constant strong polarizing magnetic field and a detection coil immersed in the field being measured, and the voltage induced in the coil is amplified and its frequency measured. The magnetometer is especially applicable to measurements of weak magnetic fields, e.g., earth's magnetic field, since frequency measurements may be made over as long a period as is required.
