Thesis submitted to Universite, Grenoble, France. The advantages of nuclear magnetic resonance are compared with electromagnetic processes for measuring the earths' magnetic field and the macroscopic theory for the Bloch model and the Packard and Varians' experiment are analyzed. The development of a particular absolute freeprecession magnetometer is studied, and the conditions are determined for obtaining a maximum amplitude signal as a function of the geometrical form of the detector coil, of the method of cut-off, and of the coupling between various parts of the system. Amplifier technology is discussed and a method is proposed for precession frequency measurement. Equipment designs are included. (auth)
