CONTINUOUS $gamma$-RAY THICKNESS GAGE OPERATING WITH A SCINTILLATION COUNTER (in Hungarian)

The first radioactive thickness gages made use of beta active sources connected to an ionization chamber. The Radioisotope Laboratory of the Csepel Iron & Metal Works developed a new, continuous instrument based on the use of gamma sources, used for controlling the wall thickness of oxygen cylinders fabricated at the plant. The measurements are based on the well-known exponentiaI attenuation law. The device includes a radiation source, a detector, and a measuring instrument. Several source materials were tested, including Tl/ sup 204/, Tm/sup 170/, Ir/sup 192/, Cs/sup 137/, and Co/sup 60/; the detecting system consists of a NaI(Tl) scintillation counter with a 2-stage photomultiplier. The source, fastened at the end of a rod, is inserted into the rolating metallic cylinder while the detecting unit is inserted into the rotating metallic cylinder while the detecting unit is placed on a table at a distance of about 30 cm. Care is taken to eliminate mechanical vibration of the systems during the measurements; the line voltage is also stabilized. The instrument was found to be very useful for continuous automatic process control, for sorting goods according to wall thickness, and for recording highest and lowest values.
