THICKNESS, HEIGHT AND POSITION GAGING FOR SMALL METAL CYLINDERS

Journal Article · · Proc. Japan Conf. Radioisotopes
OSTI ID:4689570
A method for the determination and control of height and thickness of metal cylinders to within ten-thousandths of an inch tolerance was developed with the rid of radioisotopes. A beam of beta particles from a source with a maximum energy range of 6.54 Mev was made to pass through a collimator. The metal cylinders to be gaged were positioned in front of the collimated beam. The setup was arranged in such a manner that the attenuation of the beam was proportional to the height of the cylinders. Thickness gaging was made by means of backscattering of the collimated beta beam. The method was adopted to ensure possibility of thickness gaging on all sides. Some difficulties were encountered since backscatter was very sensitive to the position of cylinders. It was also noted that the accuracy of the gaging was dependent upon the range of thickness of the cylinders to be gaged. Thicknesses should at least be below 1/2 of half- thickness of the material for reliable and consistent results. Position gaging was made by the transmission method. It was necessary for cardboard disks, which were inserted inside the metal cylinders, to be properly seated at the bottom of the cylinders. Attenuation of the beam was made to depend upon the geometrical position of the cardboard disks. Difficulties encountered were the calibration and proper interpretation of the readings of the attenuated beam. (JAIF)
