A metal strip is shaped into a tube, the adjacent edges being bent outwards to form an upstanding brim. This tube is twisted about its axis and the brim welded. Thus a fuel element can with a single helical rib is obtained. The can is filled with fuel pellets and capped. Nineteen of these fuel rods and two supporting grids form the fuel element assembly.
