A fuel element for use in a gas-cooled reactor has a nearly- cylindrical shape, its cladding sheet being provided with helically shaped radial cooling ribs. The channels formed between adjacent ribs are intersected by screening plates inserted in slots made in the cooling ribs and extending in the direction of the fuel eleiment axis. These screening plates extend radially outwards further than the cooling rnnbs and are fixed together by several spacing rings each connecting all these screening plates at a predetermined place along the fuel element axis, these rings engaging with the peripheral edges of the screening plates at slots formed in the nnnner surfaces of the rings, thus restraining the screening plates against any axial or radial movement.
