Under the influence of Co/sup 60/ gamma rays, an aqueous solution of CO/ sub 2/ was reduced to form organic products such as aldehyde, formic acid, oxalic acid, and glycol. The aldehyde and formic acid are considered the primary products of the reduction and their yield was consequently studied in detail in the pH region from 2 to 10.9 as a function of the radiation dose. The formation of both products shows a strong dependence on the pH value of the irradiated solution. The curve of the hydrogen peroxide formed at the same time has a similar shape in the acid range to that of the aldehyde. It appears that the ferric ions provide a certain amount of protection for the organic substances in process of protection against the radicals present. In order to explain the reduction process of the CO/sub 2/ in aqueous solution, a number of reaction mechanisms are assumed. (auth)
