IDENTIFICATION OF SOLID AND LIQUID PRODUCTS IN AQUEOUS SOLUTIONS OF BENZENE AFTER IRRADIATION WITH Co$sup 60$$gamma$ RAYS

Journal Article · · Energia nucleare (Milan)

The products formed by irradiation of aqueous solutions of benzene with Co/sup 60/ gamma rays were examined. In oxygen-free solutions, phenol and an insoluble substance are formed: the latter contains biphenyl, p-terphenyl, and 4.4'-dihydroxybiphenyl; its infrared spectra have also shown the presence of aliphatic CH and CH/sub 2/ groups. When the solutions were saturated with oxygen at 10 atm, the main products were hydrogen peroxide and phenol; but catechol, hydroquinone, and some aliphatic oxygen-bearing substances, originating from the opening of benzene ring, were present. Among these are carboxylic acids (oxalic, fumaric, and muconic) and unsaturated carbonyl compounds. The analytical procedures for separating these compounds are described. (auth)
