The reduction of aqueous carbonic acid in the pH range 3 to 8.7 under irradiation with UV light was investigated. Carbon monoxide, aldehyde, and formic acid were detected as the reduction product of carbonic acid. The aldehyde formation was studied as a function of irradiation time at various pH values. Some velocity constants for aldehyde formation were calculated, which decreased with the increase of the pH value. The presence of ferro ions leads to an increase in the yield of the materials formed. Some probable reaction mechanisms for the reduction of the carbonic acid in aqueous solution and the formation of organic substances were given. (tr-auth)
