THE EFFECT OF SMALL DOSES OF IONIZING RADIATION AND OF CYSTAMINE ON THE MITOTIC ACTIVITY OF CORNEAL EPITHELIUM AND OF DUODENAL CRYPTS (in Russian)

White rats (l88 g in weight) were given a total Co/sup 60/ dose of 65 r with and without the administration of 60 mg/kg body weight of the disulfide derivative of mercaptoethylamine. Mitoses were determined on plane sections of the cornea and of the duodenum which are two tissues that differ greatly in radiosensitivity. The normal mitoses are 150 in the summer and 87 in the winter for the cornea, and l08 for the duodenal tissue. The number of mitoses in the corneal tissue drops to 24 one hour after irradiation and then returns to normal within 20 hours after irradiation with a sharp increase in mitotic activity thereafter (149 to 189 dividing cells). The change in the number of mitoses in the duodenal tissue is less pronounced. The introduction of the mercaptoethylamine derivative did not substantially affect the mitotic activity observed in irradiated animals which had not been given a protective chemical compound. (TTT).
