The results of fall-out activity measurements during l960 and l96l are reported. The level of average BETA activity in these two years was about 0.7 x 10/sup -10/ c/m/sup 2/ per day and about 3 x 10/sup -10/ c per gram of residue. During some weeks after the 4 French Sahara tests and after the Soviet test series in September/October l961 the activity was increased by a factor 10 to l00 over the normal value, but did not reach the peak values of l957, which were still some 100 or 1000 times higher than the l960/61 maximum values. The activity of the storage device ( Sammler'') was 28l3x l0/sup -10/ c/m/sup 2/ on the 31st of December 1961, 53% of this activity had an age of more than three years. The investigation of the natural-activity distribution on the aerosol spectrum was continued, the conditions of investigation much improved. A quantitative extension of the experiments of J. Elster and H. Geitel results in a method for measuring the distribution of activity carriers on the aerosol size- spectrum. Furthermore a relation between aerosol concentration and addition of radon decay products could be derived. The artificial loading of natural occurring aerosol with thoron decay products enables measurements to be made of the size and charge distribution of the activity carriers in a wide mobility range. The results are in good agreement with theory. (auth)
