RADIOACTIVE FALLOUT IN CRIMEA DURING 1960-61 (in Russian)

Daily radioactive fallout measurements were carried out during 1961 and 1962 in the vicinity of Simeiz. The samples were collected on a 1 m/sup 2/ surface metallic recipient. The fission product buildup was derived from absolute BETA -activity measurements. It was found that the fission-product ac tivity remained constant at about 0.1 C/km/sup 2/, except during February 1960 when it rose suddenly to 0.4 C/km/sup 2/. The constancy of the values is due to the temporary suspension of the bomb tests during the period; the increase was caused by the explosion of the French atomic bomb in the Sahara on February 13, 1960. Some of the samples collected were analyzed by scintillation gamma counters provided with NaI(Tl) and CsI(Tl) crystals. From the values of the Ru/ sup 103/ and (Zr + Nb)/sup 95/ photopeaks of the specimens collected after the Sahara explosion it was concluded that Pu/sup 239/ was used in the French bomb. The dose calculated at the Simeiz region attributable to the products of this explosion amounted to 0.82 mr for 1960. The Cs/sup 137/ and Sr/sup 90/ concentrations were found to change exponentially with a decay half life of 20 and 19 months, respectively. (TTT)
