After the cessation of the atomic tests in the fall of l958, during the summer of l959 there was a reduction of the radioactive fall-out level; the average daily level in Czechoslovakia was lowered to 0.03 millicurie/km/sup 2/. Similar values were also observed during January and February of l960, but atfei the first French test in the Sahara the level increased to l.93 mc/km/sup 2/. This increase was only temporary and was followed by another lowering to the 0.02 mc/km/sup 2/ level during the period from August l960 to April l96l. After the second French test on April 1, l960, a relatively slight short-lived increase was noticed in April, while the third French test on Decembei 27, l960, not cause any marked changes. The total activity during January l961 was 0.45 mc/km/sup 2/ while the sum of the directly measured activity was only 0.25 mc/km/sup 2/. For the 4 six-months long periods starting on Nov. l, l958, the total activities amounted to the following values: l2l, 54, l9, and 6 mc/km/sup 2/. In l96l up to April l4 the daily average activity was again 0.02 mc/km/sup 2/. The background activity also reflected the effect of the French tests. (TTT)
