HISTOCHEMICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF ASCORBIC ACID IN THE EYE IN ACUTE RADIATION SICKNESS

S>Under study were 10 control and 50 irradiated rats. Investigation of histologic preparations of the fundus oculi shows that at the peak of radiation sickness redistribution and quantitative changes occur in the content of ascorbic acid. The degree of these changes in membranes of the fundus oculi is variable. Increased ascorbic acid content is noted in the nuclear layers, in the layers of rods and cones of the retina, in the sclera, especially in the anterior chamber, in the periphery of the cornea and conjunctiva, and in the endothelium of the vascular tract. A large quantity of grains of ascorbic acid in erythrocytes of vascular lumina was observed in two cases. In some instances in the anterior chamber, as well as in the vitreous body a large quantity of ascorbic acld was observed in the form of fine grains or homogenous mass. A drop of the ascorbic acid content was noted in the crystalline lens, reticular layers of the retina, and sometimes, in the ocular muscles. (auth)
