Preparations of Na/sub 2/ZrSiO/sub 5/ by means of hydrothermal zirconium treatment by caustic soda and the properties of the compound are described. It is shown that sodium zirconium silicate cannot be prepared by melting or sintering zirconium with caustic soda and that sodium carbonate solutions do not react with zirconium in hydrothermal conditions at elevated temperature under pressure. New data are presented on the zirconium reaction with NaOH and its solution. (R.V.J.)
