RESEARCH HOT PRESSING

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4836655
The construction and operation of a hot press suitable for the preparation of specimens of refractory inorganic ma- terials is described. Use of such equipment permits the fabrication of materials of high density and controlled grain size which are difficult to fabricate by other means. The theoretical aspects of hot pressing are discussed. The use of a plastic flow model of hot pressing to describe quantitatively the variation of the end point density of materials is described. Typical data on the temperature and pressure dependence of the density of alumina and beryllia are given. (auth)
