THE EXTRACTION OF A NUMBER OF STRONG, MONOBASIC ACIDS WITH TRIOCTYLAMINE (in Russian)

Equal volumes of acidic solution were contacted with a 0.225 M trioctylamine solution in CCl/sub 4/. The residual acid in the aqueous phase was titrated with caustic, and the free amine in the organic phase was determined by titration with perchloric acid in methyl alcohol with alizarin red as an indicator. The water in the organic phase was determined with Fisher's reagent. The equilibrium constants were found to be ~2.0 x l0/sup 8/ for HClO/sub 4/, l.l5 x 10/sup 6/ for HNO/sub 3/, 7 x 10/sup 5/ for HBr and 3.5 x l0/sup 4/ for HCl. This decreasing order of extraction for the acids can be explained by energy effects involving hydration of the anion and the electrostatic interaction. In studying the hydration of HClO/sub 4/, HCl, HBr and HI, it was found that the degree of hydration decreases with increasing radius of the anion. With high concentrations of acid in the aqueous phase, the ratio of TOA to HA can exceed one, because of dissolution of acid in the organic phase. The dissolution of acid in the organic phase decreases with increasing acid strength. (TTT)
