RADIATION INDUCED BLOCK AND GRAFT COPOLYMERIZATION OF DISPERSION OF POLYMETHACRYLATES WITH ACRYLONITRILE (in German)

Journal Article · · Makromolekueare Chemie (Switzerland)
Graft and block copolymers were prepared by grafting acrylonitrile onto preirradiated aqueous dispersions of polymethylmethacrylate. The influence of different experimental conditions as irradiation time, dose rate, and the time between irradiation and addition to the monomer on the course of the reaction was studied in detail. Fractional precipitation of the copolymer showed no homopolymer acrylonitrile, but only a fractionation according to a decreasing content of polyacrylonitrile. Determination of the molecular weight by measuring the intrinsic viscosity in dimethylformamide led to an average molecular weight of 300,000 to 325,000. Analogous grafting on other polymethacrylates was successful only in the case of polyethylmethacrylate. From this, a conclusion was drawn as to the structure of the initiating radicals in the preirradiated dispersions. The kinetics of the radical formation are given by dR/dt = k )raised dot) I - K' (R)/sup 2/ corresponding to those of the radical formation in solid polymethylmethacrylate. (auth)
