RADIOCHEMICAL BLOCK AND GRAFT COPOLYMERIZATION OF POLYMETHYLMETHACRYLATE WITH ACRYLONITRILE (in German)

Journal Article · · Makromolekueare Chemie (Switzerland)
Graft and block copolymers were prepared by grafting acrylonitrile onto pre-irradiated aqueous dispersions of polymethylmethacrylate. The influence of different experimental conditions as irradiation time, dose rate, and the time between irradiation and addition of the monomer on the course of the reaction was studied. Fractional precipi tation of the copolymer showed no homopolymer acrylonitrile, but only a fractionation according to a decreasing content of polyacrylonitrile. Determination of the molecular weight by measuring the intrinsic viscosity in dimethylformamide led to an average molecular weight of 300,000 to 325,000. Analogous grafting on other polymethacrylates was only successfull in the case of polyethylmethacrylate. This fact allows a conclusion to the structure of the initiating radicals in the pre-irradiated dispersions. The kinetics of the radical formation are given by dR/dt = k- I -k (R)/sub 2/ corresponding to those of the radical formation in solid polyruethylmethacrylate. (auth)
