Graft Copolymerization of Acrylonitrile on Pre-irradiated Polyethylene in the Swelling System (in Japanese)

Journal Article · · Kogyo Kagaku Zasshi
When graft copolymerization of acrylonitrile on preirradiated polyethylene was carried out in dimethylformamide, the degree of grafting obtained was very low. The total activation energy of grafting was 9.8 kcal over a wide temperature range, from 80 to 140 deg C. No diminution of the crystallinity of grafted polyethylene was observed in the x-ray diffraction pattern. The content of grafted acrylonitrile determined by nitrogen analysis was different from that calculated from the weight increment. As the degree of grafting increased, the solubility of grafted polyethylene in xylene at 70 deg C decreased and the softening point increased. The effect of dimethylformamide on the kinetics of grafting and the relation between solubility and frequency of grafting of these graft copolymers were discussed.
