RADIATION METHYLATION OF UNSATURATED HYDROCARBONS

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4833952
A process for radioinduced methylation of mono-olefins is given which is applicable to upgrading of refinery gases to high-octane gasoline components. In the preferred embodiment of the process, a mono-olefin of 2 to 7 carbon atoms is mixed with methane in a methane/olefin molar ratio of 9: 1 to 200: 1 and subjected to high-energy ionizing radiation at 650 to 900 deg F and a pressure of 10 to 55 atm until a total dose of 10/sup -4/ to 10 kwh per pound of hydrocarbon feed has been received. Several examples of the process are given in which ethylene was methylated. (D.L.C.)
