RADIOALKYLATION OF NORMAL PARAFFINS

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4069907
A method for producing saturated branched-chain hydrocarbons is given in which a straight-chain hydrocarbon is reacted with a mono-olefin in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst and high-energy ionizing radiation. A 3: 1 to 100: 1 mixture of a normal paraffin having 4 to 12 carbon atoms and a mono-olefin having 3 to 12 carben atoms in contact with AlCl/sub 3/ (10 to 250 wt.% based on the paraffin weight) is exposed to radiation until 10/sup -6/ to lO/sup 5/ kw-hr energy is absorbed per pound of hydrocarbon. The products are usually liquid, saturated branched-chain hydrocarbons boiling in the range 85 to 440 deg F and useful for upgrading refinery gases and light virgin naphtha to highoctane gasoline components.
