CERENKOV AND TRANSITION RADIATION FROM ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVES (in Russian)
A new radiation effect is considered. This is Cherenkov and transition radiation from a front or cluster of electromagnetic waves (or three-dimensional wave train or modulated ray) moving in a medium. In the edge region of the cluster the wave field creates an averaged (with respect to the carrier frequency) gradient force which acts on the electrons of the medium and polarizes the latter. This polarization of the medium surrounding the wave cluster will move together with it, that is, it moves with the wave group velocity. If this velocity exceeds the phase velocity of the waves in the frequency range under consideration, which is below the carrier frequency of the cluster wave field, then superlight radiation will be emitted from it at the characteristic Cherenkov angle. Similar transition radiation effects should appear during passage of the wave cluster through the boundary of the two media. The magnitudes of these effects are estimated. The effects considered here open to a new class of radiation phenomena -the Cherenkov and transition radiation emitted by wave field clusters, that is, by electromagnetic rays and quanta but not by moving particles.
