THEORY OF VAVILOV-CHERENKOV RADIATION IN AN ISOTOPIC OPTICALLY ACTIVE MEDIUM

Journal Article · · Opt. Spectry. (USSR) (English Transl.)
OSTI ID:4686846
Expressions were derived for the field and for the radiation losses due to a point-charge particle moving along a straight line in an optically isotropic medium such as, for instance, a sugar solution. When the velocity of the charged particle exceeds the phase velocity of right (or left-) polarized waves, Vavilov - Cherenkov radiation consisting of right- (or left -) polarized waves is emitted. The angle between the direction of propagation of the emitted wave and the velocity vector of the charge is determined by the refractive index of the corresponding wave. Ionization losses, according to Bohr's formula, appear to be the same in an isotropic optically active medium as in an inactive medium. (auth)
