The Vavilov-Cherenkov radiation is generated by the passage of charged particles through a transparent medium with a velocity exceeding the speed of light in that medium. The height and radius of the cone of this radiation are dependent on the velocity of the particles and the index of refraction of the medium; this makes it possible to measure the velocity of the particles. Such a cone was determined for single cosmic particles by means of electron-optical transformers which amplify the signal to such an extent that it may be photographically recorded. The experiments yielded a circular picture for the radiation cone; according to the calculation, this annulus must consist of separate light points as not more than 15 photons fell on 1 mm/sup 2/. The photographs showed an uneven distribution of the particles on the annulus and also indicated the presence of a continuous arc. The angle subtending the arc was found to be correlated to the angle of the Vavilov-Cherenkov radiation cone for a given material. In view of the scarcity of experimental data, it cannot be established yet with certainty whether this correlation is true or coincidental; further work is in progress. (TTT)
