A SPARK CHAMBER HODOSCOPE

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4833492
A single gap spark chamber was developed having a total thickness which may be as little as 40 mg/cm(sup 2). The plates are constructed of a fine stainless steel wire mesh, which has a transmission to light of 46%. The chambers are used as hodoscopes, the sparks being photographed through the mesh. They may frequently be used in the type of experiment which normally requires a large array of scintillation counters. Detailed measurements were made of the characteristics of these chambers, and they have proved robust and reliable in their operation. They have a detection efficiency of higher than 99.4%, a time resolution of 0.6 mu s, and a spatial resolution of better than 2 mm. The probability tbat the chamber produces a spurious spark is less than l in 10(sup 4). (auth)
