SPARK-CHAMBER LABELING OF TRACKS IN A BUBBLE CHAMBER
A method for the study of the interaction of high energy particles of particular masses in a bubble chamber when exposed in an unseparated beam was devised and experimentally tested. It is based on the labeling of bubble chamber tracks with the aid of a spark chamber controlled with a particle-selecting counter telescope. By correlating the positions in the spark chamber with those in the bubble chamber, the tracks of the selected particles may be indicated permitting one to study the interaction of these particles in the bubble chamber or to exclude them as an undesired contaminant of the beam. Several particles may be labeled in each bubble-chamber photograph. A preliminary experiment on labeling of 5-Bev/c K/sup -/ tracks in the 20-in. BNL H/sub 2/ bubble chamber is described. The accuracy that was obtained in the determination of track position in the bubble chamber was ~3 to 4 mm in this case; however, it can be reduced to ~1 mm. Methods used in correlating spark position with bubble-chamber track position are presented and means for improving the precision and the efficiency of scanning and analysis are discussed. The technique may be applied in beams at momenta up to ~200 Bev/c, as it is limited only by the selecting counter system. (auth)
