Hammer tracks from the photodisintegration of light emulsion nuclei

Journal Article · · Philosophical Magazine
A search was made for hammer tracks, Li8 or B8 decaying into two alpha particles through an excited state of Be8, originating in the photodisintegration of the light nuclei, C, N, and 0, of nuclear emulsions. IIford C2 nuclear emulsions were exposed perpendicular to a bremsstrahlung beam of 120-Mev maximum energy. Eight hammer tracks were identified. The cross section for the photoproduction of Li8 from C12 was found to be (4.9 plus or minus 2.0) x 10-30 cm 2. (M.C.G.)
